Ullar Vestrið - Knit Knit West

West Iceland - Goats, wool and so much more
Glacier carved landscapes, friendly goats with fur coats, ancient curvy rivers, and the world's most powerful hot spring - These are just a few of our favorite things about our Knit Knit West.
On our journey West we will visit local wool producers and dyers and drive through the tranquil Whale fjord “bay” - which is rarely visited these days. The naming of Whalefjord bay is uncertain but most believe the name derives from an old legend of Rauðhöfði the infamous Red Headed Whale whose Reign of terror ended with his heart exploding on top of Whale Mountain. But like so many of our folktales it all started with a furious elf.
We will get some tasty lunch to recharge our batteries, marvel at a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 meters out of the massive Hallmundarhraun lava field.
Have you tried knitting with goat wool? This is your chance as we visit purebred Icelandic cashmere goats - unlike any other, these gentle cuddly and curious animals were on the brink of extinction but by the selfless dedication and determination of the local goat breeder, Jóhanna Bergmann Þorvaldsdóttir, the stock has been kept alive. She will invite you over for a cup of coffee, tell you about their work and visit her animals.
